It's nice to meet you, friend!

My name is Alain McAlister, and I'm a nonbinary artist and illustrator from STL with a passion for graphic novels, comics, fiber arts, and community work. I graduated from Webster University with a BFA in December 2023. When not adventuring around, I can be found at home with my fat cat Bagel crocheting while watching a movie / video essay or at coffee shops with friends.

You can follow my current work on Instagram @a.mca.art ! If you're interetsed in working with me, feel free to email amcalisterart@gmail.com or fill out my contact form.

Artist Statement

I am not an artist, but a living art piece. My work cannot be separated from who I am; it is a collection and extension of my identity, feelings, thoughts, movements, and relationships to others. I use art to process the world while simultaneously imagining what it could be. I have a wide range of skills, styles, and levels of work, from graphic design and illustration to production art and textile works. I don’t limit myself to titles or labels; my work naturally evolves, adapts, and manifests as needed. I like to find a harmony between art and words as I go; often my images have a companion text, even if it’s not always seen. Whether its source is my journal, a book excerpt, or a reading for class, words and pictures waltz in my mind, switching leaders every third beat. I am also a creative in the larger sense; someone who makes music, crochets, sews, sings, lives life. The rhythms and melodies harmonize into the work, creating new conversations. I am constantly in a state of learning. I love to push my visual language as I grasp with textual elements and ideas.
